Melted Samsung charging cable

So this morning woke up to phone with 20% battery life, it hadn't charged over night.
And I discover that the charging cable closest to phone charging port was melted, and orange.
I place my phone on a wooden nightstand beside my bed. I'm using genuine wall adapter, and USB charging cable that came with the phone. I don't use electrical extension wires, and it's plugged straight into the wall outlet. On the same outlet, I have an iPad charging, and had no problems with it charging over night.
I've read many articles regarding the dangers of charging a phone on insulating material (ie. bedsheets, under blankets, pillows).
Thankfully, the phone hadn't exploded while I was asleep. But I'm now paranoid.
Not sure of the extent of the damage to the phone's internals.

I'm taking it to Telus (phone provider in Canada) where I purchased it from, and discuss possible warranty options.
I'll post photos of the damaged charging cable once I get home from work.

Any input?
