To do this you need to enable WIFI direct, fortunately most android 4.0+ devices come with a built-in wifi-direct service, meaning this method requires NO ROOT & no third party apps. Go to WiFi settings and open the options menu, then select WIFI-direct, press the home button to keep the WIFI-direct service running in the background (your WIFI connection must be switched on). Enable mobile data and launch the game, select multiplayer mode and you're good to go. Haven't tried it with other developers' games but it sure works with mc4.
